HOMEMAKING 4: HOSPITALITY
Hospitality is a ministry to others. It is a ministry that seems healing to others in a way, because
of the care and preparation, nice atmosphere they enter into and that you created for them, giving
them words of encouragement, and building them up in the inner man.
It is not the time to complain, grip or tell others of your problems (and it usually never is, because
God intends for us to go to HIM with all our cares and tell them to Him. After all, He alone has all
the answers, but instead it is a time to minister to THEIR needs.
Pray before the guests come, that they might feel God’s peace and presence in your home when
they come in. That wisdom might be spoken to them and that His will for their coming might be
accomplished.
If you happen to have the “gift” of hospitality people will come. God will draw them; singles,
divorced, widows at any time. If a man ends up at your door step and your husband is gone, it is
best to visit with him on the porch or outside somewhere for propriety sake, giving no place for
gossip. We do not all have the “gift” of hospitality as our gifting but we are all to be hospitable to
others when they come over.
Hospitality is seeking to serve others. It is spiritual. It never keeps score. Your heart is involved.
This is different from entertaining. In entertaining oftentimes appearance is importance. Society
keeps score. Many times entertaining is something you do out of obligation (to pay back for
someone inviting you over to their home perhaps). It is an effort of pride; all must be just so so.
Hospitality on the other hand is a labor of love. Your attitude is different.
The living room and dining rooms should be clean all the time, because you never know who
might show up. The rest of the house can be shut off if not tidy at that particular time of their
appearance. Hospitality is often on the spur of the moment. Since this is the case, try to always
keep something on hand for this occasion. It doesn’t always have to be sweet. Soup, crackers &
cheese, fruit and coffee will do just fine. It seems that food = LOVE to people. You’ve heard it
said that a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, well that is also true with most people as
well.
Table settings. Most pictures in cookbooks can show you how to set a pretty table, or a library
book, now probably the internet too. We are a lot more informal today than before. Paper plates
and cups instead of dishes are acceptable for most occasions it seems. Because it is not the
dishes that matter, it is the love and warmth that you give to the individuals when they come into
your home that counts, and that is what the Lord is pleased with.
As we have said before, “whatsoever they hand findeth to do, do it to the glory of God, or with all
thy might, or as unto the Lord.”
I want to thank our dear son, John Kehrli, for building me this beautiful website. I am so proud of it and hope that you too will enjoy the things he has put on this site to make it meaningful to you.
