LIKE A CHILD
by Esther Pontnak
And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the
kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3, NIV).
This passage was demonstrated to me in a rather unique way the other night as I watched my son and his family
moving into our home. He called about midnight to say that the flood waters were coming close to their door and
they were evacuating. They would be staying with us until the flood waters receded.
So, we made everything ready for them to have a room of their own, and a place to sleep when they arrived.
After we all got into bed I knew there was little sleeping going on in the house. My husband and I were
whispering back and forth, wondering what would happen in the morning. How long would it continue to rain?
Would my son and his wife return home to a secure, undamaged house? I could hear my daughter-in-law cough
every once in a while and realized she probably wasn’t sleeping either. Different beds, strange surroundings,
fear of the future, all were taking their toll.
But one person in our home was sleeping peacefully. My five-year-old granddaughter had crawled into bed and
was soon fast asleep. She didn’t worry about tomorrow. She was warm and dry; safe with her parents, and that
was all she needed. She fell fast asleep, peacefully and comfortably.
God tells us that’s the way we should be…like little children. I have often thought of this verse in terms of
salvation—how we have to be trusting, and have faith like that of a little child in order to be saved. But a new
thought came to me as I thought about our situation. Jesus prayed, “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in
earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).
God wants to establish His Kingdom here on earth just as it is in Heaven. Do you think that in Heaven they worry
about tomorrow? No, there is no worry! There is only peace, contentment and happiness. That’s what God
wants for us today, even while we are still here on earth.
Each of us needs to become child-like in our thinking, realizing that God is in control of our circumstances. He
promises to protect us and be with us (Psalm 91). He has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, and of love,
and of a sound mind. (see 2 Timothy 1:7.) So don’t worry—be happy. Heaven is waiting for you now.
